Estimates of the prevalence of autism are 1 in 100 children, of course given it is now understood to be a spectrum, there are many, many different presentations of symptoms and difficulties experienced by these children. Many with the right supports can go on to live a productive and normal life.

Personally, I do not think it should be called a disorder. Since, for many, they simply think and perceive the world differently. Many autistic people can have amazing talents and strengths when they feel supported.

Receiving the diagnosis for many parents can be very overwhelming and confusing. This is just one reason why you should educate yourself as much as possible to be able to navigate the future with your child.

Two of the organisations in Australia, (shown above) provide great advice and resources for autistic people and their families.

Your children often also wonder what this all means. There are several explainer videos that you can watch with your child.
